The main strongpoint in the city and also the Festung St. Malo lies on the peninsula Saint Servan, the so called Fort de la Cité, or by the German name Die Zitadelle.
This is a unique location because of its history and the re-use by the Germans of the original parts of the fort in their defence strategy. The Germans built more then 30 ST-bunkers of all sort of types like: gun, ammo, AA, MG, personnel and Command post bunkers. Some of the bunkers have been built on top of each other what makes them very special. The MG bunker of type 105 was built in several variations. Under the inside courtyard of the fort a tunnel system was made with total length of 1500 meters. At the landside a tank ditch was made in combination with other barriers.
When attacked in August and September 1944, the Allies and the Germans fought a very hard and intensive fight around the Festung and the Zitadelle . They bombed the city and the Zitadelle heavily and many times, often in combination with attacks on the fortified island of Cezembre that lies just in front of the harbour and the Zitadelle. During the Allied attacks with tanks and anti-tanks guns on the Zitadelle, the German battery on Cezembre fired on the Allies guided by the fort. The island of Cezembre was finally bombed with napalm bombs and because of the heavy resistance in the Zitadelle, the Allied were planning the same type of bombardment for the fort, but then the Germans surrendered.
